A Special Commission: Capturing the Heart of El Artesano

This month, I had the honor of being commissioned to create a gouache painting for El Artesano, a beloved Cuban restaurant in Edison, NJ. This isn’t just any restaurant—El Artesano has been family-owned for an impressive 50 years! The rich history and deep-rooted connection to the community make this place truly special.

The commission came from the daughter of one of the owners, who wanted to surprise her family with a unique gift in honor of their 50th anniversary. She asked me to paint the facade of this iconic establishment, a place that has been a cornerstone of their lives for generations. To make the gift even more meaningful, she also ordered a few prints of the painting for other family members.

It was such a sweet and thoughtful gesture, and I’m honored to have played a part in celebrating this incredible family business. El Artesano’s story is one of resilience, tradition, and love—qualities that I aimed to capture in my painting.

And for those of you who might be in New Jersey soon, there’s another reason to check out El Artesano: they have a takeout window for churros!
